Marten Kaas

Marten Kaas received his doctoral degree in the philosophy of artificial intelligence at University College Cork, Ireland. He has bachelors’ and masters’ degrees in biology and philosophy from McMaster University, Canada. During his PhD, Marten examined different machine learning techniques and their suitability for implementing machine ethics. Marten was previously employed as a researcher with the Assuring Autonomy International Programme at the University of York, UK, where he focused on elucidating the concept of transparency and its connection to safety assurance and its impact on enabling or impairing ethical principles. Additionally, Marten helped apply an ethics assurance framework to assess the ethical acceptability of an AI-enabled system in use in healthcare. At SCIoI, Marten is working at Project 19.
