Nina Poth is a SCIoI alumna and an external collaborator. Her research cuts across philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of mind and epistemology. She is specifically interested in understanding learning, reasoning, and rationality in human, non-human, and artificial systems. Nina joined the SCIoI team in February 2023 and worked in project 20, where she pursued to develop a unified concept of intelligence that can integrate the diverse set of existing interdisciplinary approaches to intelligence. At SCIoI, Nina’s aim was to identify core principles governing intelligent behaviour, and to demarcate them from principles commonly associated with the nature of cognition and rationality in the philosophy of mind and epistemology. To do this, Nina investigates foundational notions in cognitive science such as mental representation, computation, and action-oriented belief. Before coming to SCIoI, Nina was a postdoctoral researcher in the Volkswagen-funded project “Situated cognition. Perceiving the world and understanding other minds” (PI Prof. Dr. Tobias Schlicht) at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. She completed her PhD in Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh with Prof. Dr. Mark Sprevak in June 2020 (her PhD project examined the philosophical foundations of Bayesian models of concept learning from perception). She has been a visiting researcher in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Salzburg, in the Emmy Noether Research Group “From Perception To Belief and Back Again” at Ruhr-Universität.
